Legendary singer Lena Horne dies

By Misty - Posted on 10 May 2010

Lena Horne, the enchanting jazz singer and actress died Sunday. She was 92.

Rest in peace, Dear Lady. You were fabulous, and the world is a better place for having had you in it. You will truly be missed.

I'm glad she got to see Obama as president.

What a talent and great lady-what a loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to her friends and family. Rest in peace.

Rest in eternal peace Lena, you've always held a very special place in my heart as the living example of the values I was taught growing up.

My Daddy, even before I was born, had a huge crush on Ms. Horne...both as a woman and a singer.  (This was in the 1940's)  When conversation would turn to entertainers, he would always say she was the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen.  After a couple of dirty looks from my Mother, he learned to preface that with "Except for my wife, she is the most......lol!  Anyway, the times being what they were, someone would always say "Did you know she's a "Negro" (proper term in those days).  Daddy developed a stock answer..."Yes I did, and did you know I'm not blind?..I can see she's beautiful."

As Misty said, the world is a better place because you were in it.  Your legacy will live forever.

LOL. I like your Dad.

RIP Lena Horne, and thanks for all that you've given us.

The story about your dad just proves even more why you're so cool, Suzi!

R.I.P. Ms. Horne. You were always One Class Act!

Thanks y'all....My parents were the best.  They taught my brother and I by example, instead of preaching one thing and living another.  Those lessons stick!

P.S.  Daddy was right....she was gorgeous...and oh so very talented.  She was a very early leader for civil rights...again, by example.

Awesome story-thanks, Suzi. You dad gets "class act" status along with Lena Horne!

Being the young punk that I am, I mainly think of the Cosby Show when I see/hear about her. Heck, even that episode was on the year I was born ('85) so I saw it in reruns when I started watching Cosby in last 10 years as it started appearing on Nick@Nite and TBS. Now i've seen all of the episodes almost. (:

Beautiful woman indeed. Incredible human being and what a life and influence.
