Fellow RFO Geeks: Seen ABC's Defying Gravity?

By alina - Posted on 06 August 2009

To the geeks out there (you know who you are)...

At risk of sounding like an ad for ABC, I just saw Defying Gravity episodes 1 and 2 on ABC's website and am already hooked.

I've been jonesing for something, anything, that would give me a decent Sci-Fi fix since Deep Space Nine, and while this series is very different, I love it.

<sigh> I've looked at reviews, which seem less than stellar, so I'm wondering whether living in Italy for almost 5 years has gotten to me. Italy is like a giant anti-geekiness boot camp... Astrology is taken far more seriously than Astronomy here, for example. Galileo is long forgotten. </sigh>

So, have any of you seen it? Can you provide any hope regarding the integrity of my geekdom? Should I pack my bags before my dreams of living to see FTL tech developed are overcome by those of finding the perfect ratio of basil to garlic in spaghetti sauce?

As I don't like sci-fi at all, I guess I'll turn in my (fake?) geek credentials, and confess that I am merely a nerd.

LOL Suzi...

To quote my baby sister in her (thankfully over) "valley girl" phase:

Nerd is like, so, totally, 80s!

LOL....But, but...I'm like, so totally...60's-70's!!
Well truthfully I wasn't much on sci fi until I started watching some of the shows on the syfy channel.  I  definitely like Ghost Hunters / International, Warehouse 13 and Eureka.  Eureka is about as sci-fi as you can get.

I hate the fact that they changed their name to something stupid though. What was wrong with "The Sci Fi Channel"??

Nooooo... we gotta be hip and call ourselves "Syfy" or something.

I agree Tin, I think those commercials they used to do with Sci-fi and show of scIFi to IF like what if? I thought that was clever..
Thanks Lep, I'll have to check the shows out.
I love Sci Fi. I agree with lephead4obama. I think Warehouse 13 and Eureka are really good. I get bored with some of the Ghost Hunters, but like some of the cast on it who are induring most the time. I forgot, they changed the name to syfy and want to know whats up with that? I was a real Deep Space fan, and Star Trek the New generation, was my favorite. We have all the Star Trek movie's on tape, and fell in love with Lenard N. as spock years ago.
TNG and DS9 were my favorites too. I was just never the same after. I did enjoy the last movie, though.
I like quality sci-fi, but it's so hard to find what I consider good stuff. Anything that simply tries to map the current Zeitgeist to some dinky metaphor is a failure in my book. I need something that would make me think about possibilities not try to explain reality with a puppet show. I haven't seen a lot of the shows you guys are talking about so maybe I'm missing out. However, since you used an HTML/XML block to mark your sigh, I would definitely say you need not worry about the "integrity of your geekdom" :)
LOL, I guess I'm still safe for a bit... ;)
If she'd coded it manually (like I find myself doing because the formatting thing hates me), she'd be using HTML character entities. <g> ----

It's sad that we've reached a point where 'government service' is a dirty word... If we're the greatest country on earth, maybe we can have the greatest government.

I cannot wait fo V and the new Stargate series. Flash Forward looks cool too,and eastwick.

Is there going to be a new "V"??

I need to buy the old one on DVD.

Yes, they moved it till 2010 midseason.

alina, I don't hardly watch any network TV. Mostly so-called cable channels (even though I have satellite), especially USA Network.

While I love science fiction shows, my favorites are currently Burn Notice and In Plain Sight.

A friend of mine is going to be starring in a web series, though, called Raising Kayn. It's kinda sci-fi/horror, I think. Check it out.

Cool, thanks Tin! I'll definitely check it out.
Tin, two thumbs up on Burn Notice and In Plain Sight.
