Another Bush Defends Sotomayor

By Kelly Thomas - Posted on 12 June 2009

From CNN. In addition to Laura Bush, it looks like Former President George H.W.Bush is speaking out in support of Sonia Sotomayor. Who's next: Dubya?

CNN)–Former President George H.W. Bush stood up for his former judicial nominee Sonia Sotomayor Friday, telling CNN Anchor Robin Meade that GOP critics who called President Obama's Supreme Court pick a racist were off-base, and unfair.

Perhaps I should have created a new discussion for this but since it is related to her character as a person, I thought it would fit in here.  This is great article with videos from the NYTimes which provides more of a glimpse into the views of Sonia Sotomayor. Since she is speaking of how Affirmative Action really helped her, I could see where it might fuel debate from the right, but this article gave me a very positive impression of our next Supreme Court judge and it also explores Affirmative Action, which is controversial ofcourse, in an interesting way.

Here's an excerpt:

The clips include lengthy remarks about her experiences as an “affirmative action baby” whose lower test scores were overlooked by admissions committees at Princeton University and Yale Law School because, she said, she is Hispanic and had grown up in poor circumstances.

“If we had gone through the traditional numbers route of those institutions, it would have been highly questionable if I would have been accepted,” she said on a panel of three female judges from New York who were discussing women in the judiciary. The video is dated “early 1990s” in Senate records.

Her comments came in the context of explaining why she thought it was “critical that we promote diversity” by appointing more women and members of minorities as judges, and they provoked objections among other panelists who pointed out that she had graduated summa cum laude from Princeton and been an editor on Yale’s law journal.

But Judge Sotomayor insisted that her test scores were sub-par — “though not so far off the mark that I wasn’t able to succeed at those institutions.” Her scores have not been made public.

“With my academic achievement in high school, I was accepted rather readily at Princeton and equally as fast at Yale, but my test scores were not comparable to that of my classmates,” she said. “And that’s been shown by statistics, there are reasons for that. There are cultural biases built into testing, and that was one of the motivations for the concept of affirmative action to try to balance out those effects.”

Fake magus: "Well of course they would, it's the New York Times, the most liberal publication on the planet."

*snaps out of it* Sorry, devil's advocate.

LOL!!!

Some of the comments on there....

 "He's just a left-wing senile old fart"....

Since when???  Last I checked Bush was a Republican that put country first.  How does that make him Left-wing?

Guh... Some people you can't win.

 Wonder what Rush will say.

I would like to know what Republican leader thought it would be a great political idea to call the first female Hispanic nominated to the Supreme Court a racist? ...Well, that's going to help with the Hispanic vote.
Surprise!!  I think it was Newt.
What? It's well written that he pass his sell-by-date a long time ago. The GOP needs to redo their leaders list... soon
So maybe Rush beat Newt to the punch...I think they are both past their sell-by dates...they really smell rotten.

I found this comment following the CNN article ...

Every time I see the old gentleman, I can't help thinking (sadly) about what he must think of what has become of the party that he represented so well for so long.

And it must give him even greater regret when he reflects on the fact that his own son is largely responsible for what the GOP has become.

Candidate Obama had high praise for Daddy Bush.  The tone of the GOP today must really be difficult for Bush 41.

Conan joke about Bush 41 skydiving on his birthday with CNN's Robin Meade.

"Fox News reported it as 'liberal media pushes old man out of plane'.

LOL...Conan made an actual funny! ;-)

Watch it, Suzi. I like Conan. ( :

I know you have a problem with vulgar comedians so you should be happy with him being one of the good guys.

Hey Guys,

You should be really alarmed.  Palin's media blitz was her current move to be the face of the GOP.  Kathleen Parker acknowledged her as extremely smart the way she used the daughter controversy to parlay her expertise regarding the pipeline.  She also said in one of her interviews today that she would not rule out the Presidential run, but she was not going to make any big announcements.  She did not hesitate to bash Obama wherever she could, though, did she?  The saavy GOPers are claiming that she has offended many of them by being unresponsive, but I promise you, she is the only mega star that the GOP has.  They are going to ride her for all they are worth.  Big money and desperation are the operative words, folks.  She is going to push for the highest voter registration amongst "White Oppressed Man" crowd.  Mark my words.  You folks better get back control, and fast.  She is a maverick!

I don't think we can regain control quickly enough, Maggie.   The "good guys" seem to be abandoning ship at an alarming rate.  Even I have considered it.

I honestly don't think she would stand a chance against an Obama re-election.  Maybe running someone like her, and being soundly defeated, is what it will take to bring the powers-that-be in the party to their senses.  The big money will dry up fast if the GOP can't win elections.

One benefit of losing all the good guys (in a very morbid sense) is that the GOP would then lose the popular vote by default in 2010 and 2012. Fewer Republican voters, fewer bad GOP officials (re)elected. I'd hate for that to happen, as that's a huge opportunity for one of the smaller, nuttier parties to capture the refugees.

I don't think she'll prevail in 2012 if she runs, either; and she may polarize the "base" enough such that the RNC PTBs are politically bankrupt. If they don't change course by 2011 or so, the non-Democrats with at least a few ounces of sense left may need to either kick them out or rebuild from scratch.
