I'm surprised the guy thought there was a joke to be made in the rabid chimpanzee story...

NPR's Talk of the Nation had a segment on this (like they do with many a political controversy); they had a media critic on the air making some good remarks about the cartoon, the Post CYA statement, and the public response.

Took me a second to get it but I think they mean that the bill that congress produced might of well have been handled and written by rabid monkey's. Took me a few minutes to not see it in the racist way. Took a little bit of effort actually. Considering Obama didn't really write this bill, I think it's in the clear.

I'm with Misty and SG on this one, I don't see it as racist, but rather as insulting the intelligence of Congress. BUT....
Using a violent and traumatic incident, coupled with the not so subtle message about shooting lawmakers, I find the cartoon to be the height of bad taste. I would have to say that IMO, this cartoonist has a warped mind.
Maybe it's because I am from the south and racism is (unfortunately) still very much alive down here, but I instantly saw the racism in this cartoon...and was instantly repulsed.

The reason I didn't see the racist angle first was because the crazed woman-attacking chimpanzee was all over the morning news shows and they had been playing the horrific 911 call. I had the horror of that burned in my brain.

Shameful...
The fact that anyone can look at it and have a different interpretations most of them negative is the problem. That can only means that there is nothing good that comes out of it....
I will not throw the first punch but I wil certainly throw the last.....President Barack Obama.

You know, I could give them the benefit of the doubt humor-wise if the monkey had gone and done something funny or cute-crazy like broke into a 7-11 and started eating all the Ho-Hos, Snowballs or beef jerky, but what it did was RIPPED A WOMAN'S FACE OFF! The woman is in critical condition right now. That's not all that friggin' funny.
I am generally all about the funny all the time. It's part of what makes life worth living. But the chimpanzee that they are referring to RIPPED A WOMAN'S FACE OFF!
I think some of us do humor better than others. Maybe that cartoonist needs someone to consult with from now on. 'Cause a monkey that RIPS A WOMAN'S FACE OFF is not funny.
(That statement is just so horrific that I can't say it / write it without the hysterical bold face type.)
Ok people, we have been calling Bush "chimpie" for 8 years because of his walking style with his arms out in a way that was reminiscent of a chimp. Makes no sense . . . it's not racist to call a white man a chimp.

I am offended by the inherent violence in the cartoon, whether it's racist or not. It portrays murder and implies either Obama if you view it as his bill, or congress if you see it as theirs. Either way, killing isn't funny.
I found all the superbowl commercials pretty ugly too, if not outright violent they were at least mean spirited.

I first saw this cartoon last night and, unfortunately, immediately assumed it was a racist joke. When I stopped and thought about it based in fact, I realized it may be directed at Congress (altho, that scenerio is just as distasteful) I daresay that most of the average "not hooked on poliitcal websites" (LOL...that leaves us out!! ) Americans thinks that President Obama wrote the bill so they will think it is aimed at Obama as well. Sick...sick...sick...there was nothing humorous at all in this incident!!!

imo the NYP meant it to be racist but knew they could explain it in a different angle...that's how they work...deadbeats that they are...just looking for a reaction, no care who they offend....just makes me really sad!
NEW YORK - The New York Post is apologizing for a cartoon that critics say links President Barack Obama to a raging chimpanzee shot dead by police in Connecticut. But the newspaper also says the image was exploited by its longtime antagonists.
After two days of protests, the paper posted an editorial on its Web site Thursday saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but "to those who were offended by the image, we apologize."
The editorial also says some people who have long-standing differences with the paper saw the cartoon "as an opportunity for payback."
The editorial calls them "opportunists" and says: "To them, no apology is due."

I don't know about the Post's history regarding race, but I'm guessing it's a checkered one like many old major publications. But figuratively giving one's critics a mooning like this is merely playing the victim, IMO, and is an indication that their editorial staff is leaning further right. Already the right-wing 'net is hopping up and down saying that the backlash is racist since Bush was compared to a chimp-- the old Limbaugh "reverse racism" claim.

This is just PC run amok. I don't think for a minute that the artist meant for his cartoon to be explicitly racist, and if he implicitly knew that it was then it just shows even more need for dialog not punishment.
I don't think that discussion means that someone should lose his or her livelihood for drawing something controversial. It means that, whether such things are published or not, that we need to understand and take into account how such things might be perceived by people other than middle-aged white males.

Racist . . . Ahh - OK - I did not look at it that way. Obama did not write the bill.
Saw it as comparing the bill writers to having the intelligence of a monkey.

AG Eric Holder is entirely correct in that we are cowards for not being able to discuss this openly.
I don't think that discussion means that someone should lose his or her livelihood for drawing something controversial.
