More GOP Obstruction

From CNN:

GOP group gets tough against Republicans who support stimulus

Someone in the comments noted GOP=Grand Obstructionist Party. I think they got it right.

Interesting.

It must really suck to be one of the few remaining Republicans with a brain and a conscience; knowing you will be killed politically by your own party if you actually do what you were elected to do.

I'm reminded of the story of Sen. Ross of Kansas, who was one of Kennedy's "Profiles in Courage".  Ross, no friend of Andrew Johnson in the years after Lincoln's assassination, voted against Johnson's conviction on impeachment charges because he felt there was insufficient evidence.  And his vote was the deciding one.  He was roundly reviled by his party and lost his seat in the next election.  But he retained his standards and his conscience.

Oh, and the party that was so mean to him?  You guessed it...

Unfortunately that tends to be the definition of moral courage, standing up for what's right, rather than going along to get along.
The GOP ought to read the comments section of that article for a little dose of reality.
You'd think that, given the huge amount of support Obama received, despite a progressive/libertarian-leaning netroots wary of either mainstream party, the GOP would realize that there's political capital to be had in the online community.

It's sad that we've reached a point where 'government service' is a dirty word... If we're the greatest country on earth, maybe we can have the greatest government.

My prediction: this may backfire. I mean, threatening these Senators into a "no" vote. Not gonna fly with most voters.

I agree Izzy, especially in Maine, the home of two of the Senators.  The GOP can mount all of the ultra conservative candidates they want to there, without a snowball's chance in he!! of them being elected...so if a hard line Republican were to win the primary (doubtful), the seat would be a sure fire Democrat win.

Does anyone else see the correlation between this and "whistle blowers" in the private sector?  Speak out for what you believe in, and your job is threatened.

Excellent point... if anything the Maine senators stand to gain more support from Independents and Democrats.
I think if they defeat Specter in a primary, it's pretty much a clean win for the Democrat in Pennsylvania too.
It'll probably be the same if they torpedoed Snowe and Collins. Talk about cutting off one's nose to spite the face...

These people are the ultimate ideologues. Situations don't matter. Facts don't matter. Either give more tax cuts to the wealthy, or do nothing. The economy will eventually right itself. While this may be true (about the economy eventually righting itself) we may have 20-25% unemployment and half the polulation homeless before it does. But people hurting does not matter, as long as ideology is kept intact. What a bunch of dumb a**es.

Yes, a hauntingly familiar theme.

This group isn't officially tied to the GOP.  I thought the name sounded familiar and it was.  This PAC was the one that paid for those nasty Rev. Wright ads that flooded TV just before the election.  I did some googling and found that they've been behind other nasty stuff even though they didn't start until late in the campaign.

They're connected to the Newsmax.com website and also Rev. Moon supporters.

It probably would be best if the GOP distanced themselves from this group but they probably won't.
