Do We Want Stevens to Win?

By John Martin - Posted on 13 November 2008

Or do we want to kick every last bum out of the party and start anew.  Just a few quick words about the senior Senator and his situation.

If he wins (which is looking less and less likely), he will be removed by the Senate.  I don't think many sitting Republicans are going to stick their necks out for a convicted felon and try and fight his removal.  I don't even think the specter of giving Sarah Palin a shot at his seat would change their minds.

Do we-- the everyday Republicans in the U.S.-- want this guy to stick around?  Many Republicans in Alaska have even gone lukewarm on him.  How is keeping phonies like this in office going to help our party?  Wouldn't it be better, as sad as it seems, to allow a Democrat to get the seat, rather than have the Republican felon hold on to it?

One last thought.  In 2006, when Obama and Coburn were trying to create USAspending.gov, Senator Stevens put a secret hold on the legislation.  Here was Obama and Tom Coburn (R) looking to increase transparency in federal outlays, and Stevens was trying to secretly prevent the legislation from leaving the Senate.

I don't want Stevens to win at all.  He will get kicked out and this will give the whack job an opportunity to appoint herself or someone of her farout right wing agenda.  Secondly, I want Obama to succeed and I think more Dems in congress will help.
"Here was Obama and Tom Coburn (R) looking to increase transparency in federal outlays, and Stevens was trying to secretly prevent the legislation from leaving the Senate. " Yup! The felon has got to go. Alaska I am shocked the race is even remotely close. This should have been called for Begich the second the polls closed.

Throw him out I say; he's not liked by his colleagues, if you can believe it, he's worse than John McCain. When he was chair of appropriations, he would run rough-shod over everyone and would make people beg for their pork while he sent goo-gobs of money to a state with 600K people. Alaska gets more federal handouts per capita than any other state and it's one of the wealthiest states. NY get less money for homeland security than many of the midwestern states. It's all messed up.

I hope he loses, in fact as much as it pained me I voted straight democrat this election I want them all out and we need to start all over.

Speaking of Democrats and kicking out, that Obama is just too nice for me. He should given Lieberman the heave-ho. But I bet he's gonna make an example out of him by keeping him in his position and letting the people in the Constitution State deliver the death blow. Many a democrat will remain silent come time for Lieberman's election...or maybe polls will show early enough that he can't win, even as an Independent and he just won't run.

Yup! Throw him [Stevens] out! And double yup, Lieberman should get his death blow from the constitution state. Now that will be sweet. I was not mad that Lieberman supported McCain, I was pissed at the way he went about it. He seemed to be against Obama more so than for McCain and now he wants to kiss up to Obama.
How's that saying go....? Better to keep your enemies close.

Kill two birds (Stevens and/or Palin in the Senate) with one well-thrown stone!

also

100 aides who worked in Obama's presidential campaign are heading to Georgia to help Jim Martin in his hotly contested Senate Dec. 2 runoff, two Democrats close to Martin's campaign said Tuesday.

I'm either/or on this one. (I still can't understand why this race is so close)

If he's elected then he'll be kicked out of the Senate. If he isn't kicked out then No Sane Senator Will Work With Him Ever. Period. Nada. Nobody wants to touch this guy with a ten foot (fifty foot?) pole.

I hope he doesn't win, but if he does he's not out of the clear. I hope.

If he wins, he will be expelled.  And the part B of this horror story is then Palin gets to appoint a new senator.  Much better than Begich wins outright.

Palin gets to pick? *shudder*

Thanks lep, that did it. Time to start pulling for Begich.

What's worse, Palin could make a deal with the Lt. Governor of Alaska and resign, then he would appoint her to the Senate. She can't appoint herself. Now, that's a scarier than her appointing someone.

It's getting better.  Now Begich is ahead by 800 votes.

A felon cannot vote but can run for Senate?

That just blows my mind personally, I cannot even fathom how the race would even be close and even more I cannot understand why he is even allowed to run at all.

"How can you build a future when your past still haunts your present" - M.R.H.

<A felon cannot vote but can run for Senate?>

Depends on the state, although it seems that Alaska does have such a law, but for Tuesday Stevens was able to bypass it due to not being sentenced yet.

As for his reelection? I hope he gets the old heave-ho. Real corruption needs to be rooted out no matter what party.

But I'll never understand the hate for Lieberman.

"For those who plan with audacity and execute with vigor,
progress is the magnificent by product."

Imagine being a hardcore Republican and watching Tom DeLay or Mitch McConnell throwing their support behind, say, Hillary Clinton or John Edwards in December of last year (improbable, and a game-changer), after telling everyone that they'll vote/support Republican. There are some ways where the political comparisons break down, but this is how a lot of Democrats and progressives view Lieberman: a traitor.

"But I'll never understand the hate for Lieberman."

You mean by the party or those of us who now loathe him? If it's the former, he broke his promise to his party as to how he would campaign for McCain and not say speak ill of Obama, he did the opposite at the convention and while on the trail.

For me, the role in the campaign was for one purpose and that was to use his religion to scare others to be afraid of Obama's support for Israel and terrorism.

Exactly, but my opinion of Lieberman predates his campaigning for McCain and has more to do with his associations and support of Pastor Hagee (Lieberman comparing Hagee to Moses) and his minions in the Christian Zionist movement and other flavors of End Timers. Lieberman can no longer be trusted on matters of foreign policy. I believe Obama wants to keep 'im in order to more effectively contain him.

It's not certain by any means that Stevens would be expelled from the US Senate. He will almost certainly keep his pension regardless.

Any GOP rule or Alaskan law falls before the Constitution. Congressional Research Service recenly issued a report for Senate Rules for convicted felons:

"Indictment and/or conviction of a crime that is a felony does not constitutionally disqualify one from being a Member of Congress (nor from being a candidate for a future Congress), unless a Member’s conviction is for certain treasonous conduct committed after taking an oath of office to support the Constitution.2 There are only three qualifications for congressional office, which are set out in the United States Constitution at Article I, Section 3, clause 3 for Senators (and Article I, Section 2, clause 2, for Representatives): age, citizenship, and inhabitancy in the state when elected. These constitutional qualifications are the exclusive qualifications for being a Member of Congress, and they may not be altered or added to by Congress or by any state unilaterally.3 Once a person meets those constitutional qualifications, that person, if elected, is constitutionally “qualified” to serve in Congress, even if under indictment or a convicted felon.4

I have learned alot about Alaskans during this election season. A strange lot, for sure! I want Stevens to go down because I dread the idea that Palin could somehow replace him in the Senate-even if it's a small chance.

In one of Palin's many recent interviews, I love how she said she'd love to work with/support Obama and in the same breath kept talking about how important the Ayers association was and how totally justified she was to bring it up (and keep bringing it up!) I almost think she really believes Obama will give her a call for advice-yikes!

Anyway, the worst thing about Stevens is the smugness and "above the law" attitude. Most normal people would have resigned/bowed out given the conviction (even if one plans to fight it) for the good of the process/people. The hypocricy within our party is alarming. I am really excited that Stevens is losing-hope his lead continues to decrease!

After seeing that smugness and defiance of the law in Dick Cheney and his ilk, I'm seeing this as more of a pattern in what the GOP calls "leadership".

He needs to go. He is an example of what is wrong with our party. And if he gets kicked out, Palin will just repay a crony with a gift seat.

The enemy of "the best" is not "the worst." The enemy of "the best" is "good enough."

Do I want Stevens to win?  On one hand, if he loses we won't have a convicted felon representing America.  On the other hand, if he wins, the next time someone cites Palin's high approval rating in AK we can say it's the same state that re-elected a convicted felon and that says very little about Palin's credibility.
I think there are other ways to discredit Palin, some of the best being Palin herself.

You just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake.

Heck, no, I don't want Stevens to win!  He would surely get kicked out of the Senate and in all likelihood Sarah Palin would run to fill his spot and win.  YIKES!!

Palin said in a recent interview that she looks for signs from God, open doors she should "plow through".  Well, I want God to slam this particular door in her face.

Why do I picture God's door accidentally blowing open one day, Palin frantically trying to plow through and the angels collectively pushing back against the door with all their might saying "No, that was not an open door for you. You never even asked for forgiveness for all that terrorist talk! Go away!"?

Bush has hinted he will use lingering powers of a former president, known to legal scholars as the "Harry Truman Precedent," to worm his way out of any inquiries or investigations.  Nixon used this B.S. too!!  I realize Obama will have a lot on his plate, but this is one evil that NEEDS to be exorcised!!

A better target will be Dick Cheney, and you can bet he'll mimic Truman and Nixon. Nothing a timely and wise SCOTUS ruling won't fix.

And in Palin's speech today she thanked God for President Bush. Wow-is she in this universe?

I am a bit biased, but I would prefer a Senator with some competence and intelligence.  Anyone that actually believes they "receive an Internet" instead of receiving an email has no business being in the current government.  At first I thought he was dumbing it down for someone until it became clear to me he had absolutely no idea how the basic principles of the Internet worked.  This from someone who sits on, and has headed, powerful committees?!?!

I also have this difficult time rationalizing the arguments from various sides of my Republican Party.  Republicans supposedly don't want socialism and we want fiscal responsibility, yet here is an example of a high ranking Republican that has brought home more pork over the years from the Federal government than most.  He obviously isn't the only one.  How can we honestly claim to be the party of small government and fiscal responsibility with people like this.  It almost leads me to believe that Republicans cannot realistically represent these values and that maybe the concept of small government is purely relative.

I saw some of the items and was just wondering is there anyone here that is really a Republican?   Why do Democrats put up website called Republicans for _________________.   Is this some kind of marketing campaign.

I am a Republican and I would love to see Stevens win if only to prevent the Democrats from the fillibuster.  Then put in Sarah if only to really irk every Democrat, every day especially all who read this site.

Why are Democrats so afraid of Sarah?

PS Rush and Sean will have a lot to talk about.  It will not be about Hussein Obama but the legions of liberals outside of Washington.  The vicious losers of prop 8 in California are the beginning.  Showing how upset Democrats get when they don't get their way.  I get a kick out of Democrats saying to Republicans, you lost fair and square now give Obama a chance.  Just like Democrats lost fair and square twice on prop 8 or lost fair and square twice with George Bush and never accepted either.   There will be more blowups because Obama is a Bill Clinton clone.  He had a father that abandoned him, then a mother who ditched him and then to make sure he was exactly like Bill he married a true _________(fill in the blank to describe Hillary and Michelle two peas in a pod- no wonder they hate each other so much).  Hussein Obama is not a left wing idealogue.  He is a crowd pleaser just like Bill.  In Chicago he hung with the Chicago communists and America haters.  In Washington he will be a left center leader.  Clinton made the most sweeping changes of welfare and Obama, he will make the UAW come up with some strong concessions to get the big 3 money.  He will do what it takes to keep the Democrats happy without upsetting Republicans too much.  And that will really upset the lunatic left, Democrat base like those that read this site.

Too funny...democrats aren't afraid of Palin they know she's a loser. All the smart people figured out that the Republican ticket sucked.

As for the Republicans here, we are afraid of her and people like you who know nothing about government and who  think spouting talking point rhetoric and spiteful, childish attacks makes them a "good" Republican.

Do you feel better now that you got that out of your system? Obviously you're stewing over the loss and it's apparent you're looking around for someone to blame. Do you own a mirror? If I were you, I'd stick to reading Ayn Rand.

His rhetoric indicates to me that he hasn't read "Atlas Shrugged". ;-)

Yeah, I noticed...maybe he didn't finish, it's over 1000 pages and he's clearly good and providing info "as seen on TV."

Well said, Golf!

Hey "Mr. You Can't Be Real Republicans", this is your brain (I am holding up an egg &  now cracking it.) This is your brain after being exposed to Rush & Hannity (egg sizzles on pan.) Any questions?

I guess if we choose to think for ourselves and process things in an intelligent manner, we can't be "real" Republicans.

Start working on that Palin 2012 campaign...make sure it's really hate-filled and full of lies. It worked so well this time!

Favorite site <edited>

That's what I love about Democrats.  Give them a justifiable position and they retort that you are spouting talking points.  If you were Republicans you would agree that is it good <edit> Obama had no backbone and is not really a socialist or a communist just a Bill Clinton clone.

Uh, sorry, you still sound like Sean Hannity. Ergo, I thought you were brainwashed before, and you haven't convinced me otherwise.

If I were a democrat, I'd take that over your "Republican" view of America that includes racism, hateful speech and rhetoric any day. Let me guess, you're in that part of PA that boarders W.Va or is it the part that Murtha referenced? News flash, you version of our party is going down and going down hard.

BTW, have you found that mirror?

Hello whois, and we welcome you to RFO, as long as you dispense with the name-calling such as communist and lunatic.  We welcome all points of view here, but do not allow name calling.

If you will take the time to read the other/older threads, you will see that we are, for the most part, all Republicans who have feel disenfranchised by the hard right turn our party has taken.  We think for ourselves, and don't follow the leadings of such people as Rush or Hannity.  In the spirit of full disclosure, we do have some resident Dems who have joined with us in the spirit of bipartisanship.  Of course, you do not seem to be one that would be partial to bipartisanship, even if you choose go under the guise of "The Mystery Worker".

Thank you, Suzi

Analysis: Either whoisjohngalt is a Republican official, or a conspiracy theorist (the stupid kind that believes other conspiracy theorists).

1st paragraph: Paranoid assumption that Democrats secretly created this site. According to this logic, Colin Powell, Susan Eisenhower, Christopher Buckley, Wick Allison, Richard Riordan, and other Republicans openly supporting Obama are all closet Democrats/liberals/progressives. This is as good a representation of the attacks of the ultra-right on anyone who dares to abandon them.

2nd paragraph: I think he meant "Stevens should win to keep the Democrats from a filibuster-proof supermajority", so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on that one (all a party needs to have a protected filibuster is 41 dedicated votes). Since supporting a Republican, even one as intellectually vapid and morally devoid as Sarah Palin, and especially if the replacement torments Democrats, is favorable to him, I really don't have much else to say about this guy's, well, trollishness.

His favorite website validates most of your assumptions, along with a racist tendency.  Like all good trolls, whois has been sent back under his bridge.
What did Gandalf say at the end of the trolls' "discussion" in The Hobbit? "Sunlight take you all!"? I need to dig out my copy again.

Heh -- this is such a great post on so many levels!

"For those who plan with audacity and execute with vigor,
progress is the magnificent by product."

"Dawn take you all, and be stone to you!"

It might be fun to play with the GOP the same way that Gandalf played with the trolls, but that would mean sinking to Rush Limbaugh's level.

"Obama is a Bill Clinton clone."  Good!  I hope you're right because I remember the economy we had in the 90's compared to the garbage we have now!!
Looks like Steven's chances are slim, according to a GOP pollster.
I'm a jackalope Republican, so I'm exempt from your ranting and raving, whois.

The Begich people are pretty confident they won, and I agree.  Here are the percentages :

Anchorage : poll vote Stevens 49.9% Begich 46%

non-poll vote : Stevens 41.5% Begich 54.6%

8,000 left in Anchorage to count

Fairbanks : polls Stevens 48.2% Begich 44.7%

non-poll vote : Stevens 39.1% Begich 53.7%

ballots left 5,000

rest of state : ballots left 11,000

Begich should win.  He's done real well in the early vote and absentees.

I sure hope Begich wins.  It would be the ultimate embarrassment for the Rep party to return a convicted felon to the Senate, even if they did kick him out.  arggghhhh

Zippedy Doo-Dah

Next week, Stevens' GOP colleagues in the Senate may consider whether to kick the Senate's longest-serving Republican out of their caucus. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., will demand the vote on Tuesday even if the Alaska race remains undecided or headed for a recount, spokesman Wesley Denton said Thursday. - Link
