Ann Romney On Seamus Episode: ‘The Dog Loved It’

By Misty - Posted on 16 April 2012

From the ABC transcript of the interview:

DIANE SAWYER: As we move away from this primary campaign into the next phase– again, on Yahoo, we got two questions most often, first about Seamus– which as you know is out there forever– would you do it again?

MITT ROMNEY: Certainly not with the attention it’s received.

DIANE SAWYER: You said it was the most wounding thing in the campaign–

ANN ROMNEY: It’s crazy.

DIANE SAWYER:–so far.

ANN ROMNEY: The dog loved it. The dog was, like–

DIANE SAWYER: But the dog got sick, right?

ANN ROMNEY: Once, he– we traveled all the time and he– he ate the turkey on the counter. I mean, he had the runs. But– he would see that crate and, you know, he would, like, go crazy because he was going with us on vacation. It was to me a kinder thing to bring him along than to leave him in the kennel for t– in– in– in a kennel for two weeks, so.

These are some cold, heartless people!

Did Romney's Dog Run Away When It Got to Canada?

“According to a trusted . . . tipster, two of Mr. Romney’s sons had an off-record conversation with reporters where they revealed the dog ran away when they reached their destination on that infamous journey in 1983. Mr. Romney’s wife, Ann, has previously said Seamus survived the trip and went on to live to a “ripe old age.” (Source)

"These are some cold, heartless people!"

Romney lost a Massachusetts Senate election to Ted Kennedy, who left a 29 year old female staffer to drown in his car that he drove off the road into a lake/bay. He called his attorney when he got out... did not notify police or authorities until hours later.

I am going to vote for Obama over Romney, but given the 40 year pass the left, the press, and the more or less great state of Massachusetts gave to ol' Ted and his little indiscretion, I can't get too worked up about  Seamusgate.

I found it incredibly embarassing that the Democrats-- Obama included-- paid such homage to Teddy during their 2008 convention. I'm glad you brought up the comparison between this and what Kennedy did.

People shouldn't mistreat animals, but it's plain nutty that he's getting such a bum wrap on this when there are politicians out there doing far worse things. Animal lovers could very well be the deciding swing voters in this election.

Woof!

You'd be surprised how many people-including conservatives I know-who are really disturbed by this story and find this worse than all his flip flops. There are many people who think the way you treat your dog says alot about your character and this actually polls as an issue for many. I have a question for Ann Romney: how exactly do you know that Seamus "loved it?" Did she sit up there with him for some of the trip and share in his excitement? Is she a dog psychic? At the very least this reflects very poor judgement. Makes you glad that Beau is lucky enough to be with the Obama family and not stuck on top of a car for endless hours with the Romney's! Obviously, Ted Kennedy had many character flaws, as well, in a much deeper sense. But last I checked Romney is now running against President Obama and Kennedy's free pass should not prevent us from questioning the judgement of Romney when it comes to animals or cutting off life saving funding for women at Planned Parenthood. He needs to own and defend his record, positions on issues that matter and treatment of his pets, past and present. Welcome to running for President!

Nicely said Kelly.

They did it again, and again, and again. What kind of poor judgment would put the dog on top of the station wagon for a 12 hour trip?  If she went along with that stupidity, there's no hope.

"Kennedy's free pass should not prevent us from questioning the judgement of Romney when it comes to animals or cutting off life saving funding for women at Planned Parenthood."

I would completely agree with this statement if Romney had strapped an employee of Planned Parenthood to the top of his car and driven her to Canada. That would have shown extremely poor judgment at a level comparable with Kennedy's flaws (although Romney's passenger probably would have had a better chance of survival than Kennedy's).  But I think we can fairly call Romney's stand on funding for Planned Parenthood a policy matter (and policy reflects character, too)  in a way that "The Shame of Seamus" is not.

Kennedy's free pass SHOULD prevent a large number of people (not everyone) from making judgement on the Romneys dog story if any of those people a) supported or voted for Ted Kennedy while he was in office, b) spoke highly of his record of public service after 1969 [the year he  left Mary Jo Kopechne to drown in the lake] c) agonized how Vitter and other Republicans who commit sexual indiscretions and  'get off easy' but never protest Kennedy's political 'resurrection' d) blog or post about how Republicans seem to get away with all manner of sexual indescretion but pass on the Kennedy or Clinton sagas as untoward prying into public figures' private lives or some such.

"But last I checked Romney is now running against President Obama." Indeed, as the boys home from the wars used to say, "that was long ago and besides the wench is dead."

Obama in 2012.

Well, since I was only born in 1968, I feel that I cannot be held responsible for any free passes given to anyone in 1969.  I didn't absolve Ted Kennedy nor ever really give two hoots about him much less tout him as a leader.  Does that earn me the right to condemn Romney for the bad judgment in the dog transporting?

I was born in 1970 so I can't pretend to be an expert on the Ted Kennedy scandal. It's completely irrelevant to this race and the many flaws Romney owns (even those he tries to erase with the handy etch-a-sketch.) This election should be about who will take us forward and who will take us backwards to the policies of Bush. It's about a president who proudly signed the Lilly Ledbetter Act as one of his first actions and a candidate who can't even articulate a position on equal pay for equal work and thinks Scott Walker is awesome even after repealing an equal pay law in Wisconsin. It's about a president who put his political career on the line to pass comprehensive health care which will insure and benefit millions-against the advice of even liberals afraid of the backlash-and a candidate who promises to "get rid of" Planned Parenthood and repeal Obamacare (which could ultimately kill women, just in a different way than Kennedy and affecting many more lives!) The contrast could not be more clear and consequences of a Romney win more dire. I will do everything in my power to make sure President Obama gets 4 more years to keep us on the right track and Romney is sent to the doghouse! Or better yet, to the crate on top of his car!

Bravo!  Clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap.

I agree.

"This election should be about who will take us forward and who will take us backwards to the policies of Bush."

Really?

Then why did you say this on a thread based upon a trip Romney made with his dog in 1983? How does this relate to the policies of Bush and the current Republian GOP?

Is the dog going to ensure funding for Planned Parenthood?  Was the car roof crate manufactured overseas, adding to the deepening of our trade deficit and the outsourcing of American jobs?  The Romneys vacationed in Canada. Shouldn't they have been sensitive enough to know that the American gulf coast would need serious financial support  some 20 years later?

Romney strapped his dog to a car in 1983.  Thus, we cannot trust him with Afghanistan, Iraq, reproductive rights, tax policy, and health care in 2012. Ummm.... No.

I see more relevance, and worry more, about the 2012 Democratic party which willingly allows some moron to call herself a "Democratic Strategist"and then  state on TV, "Ann Romney never worked a day in her life." Then she takes 2 news cycles to fully admit she screwed up.  Where was Obama's political team when that genius started floating around the news shows?

Put another way, I reject the operative assumption here:

Democratic stupidity, no matter how pertinent, constitutes irrelevant distractions. (See Maher vs Limbaugh)

Republican stupidity, no matter how remote or irrelevant, constitutes unmistakable clues to the contemporary "narrative." (See Seamus vs Lewinsky)

I support Obama (as in money and voting). But I am not an ideologue and I don't LOVE Presidents. I also like this site... a lot.  But it sometimes gets a little FoxNews Left around here.  I am happy to serve as the house irritant on such occasions.

You're welcome. :-).

I think you are confusing me with someone who said the dog issue was the defining issue of the election. I am just saying to the Romney's: "welcome to modern politics and running for President in 2012." They better get used to it and have better responses to questions they knew would be asked. You saw what happened with the Rev. Wright situtation, ridiculous and dated as it was. How did Obama respond? Head on and beautifully with a speech on race which spoke to his character and philosophy. When he was up against the wall on an unfair attack, he proved what he was made of. Do you really think operatives will/should only look at Romney's decisions and issues over the past few years and only focus on policy-related material? Was it fair to bring up Ron Paul's racist articles from so many years ago? Character matters and the dog issue is nothing compared to his horrific policies on women's issues, but it IS fair game and relevant to his overall decision-making. It's not so much the poor judgement and cruelty of putting his dog on the roof for long trips, but his response to the question by Sawyer:

would you do it again?

MITT ROMNEY: Certainly not with the attention it’s received.

This is similar to his hiring of illegals. He was against it only because he was "running for President for Pete's sake." The man has no soul and no spine and only makes or regrets decisions based on political ramifications. You know if this was Obama who had done this, the Rove machine would be playing it up at every opportunity, probably with yard signs showing Dogs Against Obama. My goodness, the other side creates controversy that doesn't even sync with reality (Obama's birth certificate, etc.) and people are upset Mitt has to answer to his treatment of his family dog? I thought you wanted the Democratic side to fight fire with fire and forget about playing fair. This is the big time. Again, not saying it's a big deal or game changer in terms of how the election will play out but I don't think he deserves a pass or to have it ignored.

Ha. Looks like the Rove machine was desperately trying to find a "counter-dog" story against Obama. Pretty funny. And credit to Romney-great response!

Mitt Romney refused to take the bait Wednesday when asked about stories circulating that President Obama ate dog meat as a child in Indonesia, telling conservative radio host Bill Cunningham: “This campaign is going to ultimately become about jobs, not dogs.”

Romney has faced questions, even at one point from former rival Rick Santorum, over putting his dog Seamus on the roof of the family car on a vacation to Canada.

Obama was 8 years old and like all 8 year olds he ate what his guardians and parents put before him. This is lower than low and a real stretch. Romney is not a complete idiot.

I hope for the sake of our country that the candidates stay classy.  While I may not vote for Romney, I completely respect that he can rise above the bullsh*t.

I think Romney will rise above the bs but what worries me are the Super PACs and I just don't see Team Romney setting reasonable rules with them. It will be anything goes. Not that Obama will be anxious to control "stepping over the line" on his side but Team Obama already said Mitt's religion is off limits so we'll see. Could get ugly fast. Can I just shut off the tv & radio until after the Nov. election?

"Can I just shut off the tv & radio until after the Nov. election?"

With you 100% on that one.

Ok. I guess they are "going there." Seriously, going after President Obama for something he did when he was 8 years old? Tasteless, ridiculous, petty and classless! Shows some desperation, don't you think?

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) weighed in Thursday on the presidential race’s latest dogfight — about dog meat.

In response to the running controversy about Mitt Romney having once taken his dog for a long family trip in 1983 by tying the dog’s carrier to the top of a car, some conservatives have highlighted a quote from President Obama’s memoirs, in which he briefly discussed his boyhood experience of having been fed dog meat by his stepfather in Indonesia.

McCain, whom Obama defeated in 2008, has now posted this message on Twitter, linking to a slideshow of various politicians’ pet dogs over the years:

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney responded Thursday the attack from the Romney campaign that President Obama ate dog meat as a child in Indonesia.

What I don't understand? why would silly Republicans in the white house make comments to the president about what he ate in  Indonesia : The President never made comments about Romney's  dog did he?? I thought the pundits and public was debating about Romney's issue?? Oh well I guess they have to find something silly and irrelevant to attack the President. I see Romney made the most assine comment about the President sucking it up for four years without a vacation because of the economy. The American people need to keep a note of all the comments and  criticism that the Republicans and conservative news make regarding no vacation and paying for your own personal vacation spot; or flying on public transportation and how many attires  that the first lady can wear and etc if Romney should win the Presidency.!! unbelievable how silly these old so called professional meat heads are acting! sheeesh!

Oh, this is classy. Turns out one of the secret service accused in the prostitution scandal was charged with protecting Palin when she was on the ticket. She commented on the body guard, but had to get in her dig at the president about eating dogmeat. Lovely.

Sarah Palin commented last night on the photos a Secret Service accused in the prostitution scandal posted on his Facebook wall of him protecting the former Alaska governor back in 2008.

“Well, this agent who was kind of ridiculous there in posting pictures and comments about checking someone out. Well, check this out, bodyguard. You’re fired,” Palin said. “And I hope his wife kicks his ocoli and sends him to the doghouse, as long as he’s not eating the dog, along with his former boss.

“You know, the president, for one, he better be wary there of – when Secret Service is accompanying his family on vacation. They may be checking out the first lady instead of guarding her,” Palin said.

Palin is an unfettered idiot. She just can't help herself.

I really believe Palin is a mental case. How does she have time to travel all over the United states with four kids at home and a special needs child??? I see where her priorities are at!! She loves the lights, Cameras and action!!  She doesn't want to be scrutinzed for being the ding bat that she is but she wants to condemn other people and declare herself pure and innocent of all wrong

It was a point worth saying many times. Lol.
