Obama's selection of Gates
Obama's selection of Gates is precisely why I voted Obama as a republican. Obama is the first candidate to show such a high level of intelligence in his choices for cabinet positions using criteria to form a group that acts as a prescription against groupthink. For those in the peanut gallery who think Obama should only surround himself likeminded people, the gallery members should realize to do so would invite groupthink. Haven't we had enough damage from bad decisions over the last eight years alone? To prevent groupthink, a group needs to be formed that is diverse, in terms of experience, political position, ethnic heritage, and gender. It is also imperative that at least one member be a vocal and competent "devil's advocate", someone willing ask the tough questions, to present reasons why a particular decision would be detrimental. I believe it is every US citizens duty to understand groupthink, and if there are disagreements among the populace regarding Obama's appointees, , I would urge that the detractors would view the candidate under consideration, relative to that candidate's ability to prevent groupthink. Preventing groupthink in our highest halls of power should be a priority for all of us. Just because I am conservative does not mean I should ignore solid research on groupthink, and pine for same old situation of groupthink that has caused so much damage over human history.
Once again I stress that everyone reading this post would carefully research groupthink, even if only to update your knowledge. Anyone who fully understands groupthink, also fully understands why Obama has chosen each of his cabinet members.
Gates has shown increased competence over his predecessors, and fits the bill of a person to prevent groupthink very well. Kudos to Mr. Obama for showing the leadership to implement change.

I agree wholeheartedly. Each post thus far has shown us that Obama is interested in intelligence and competence in his white house, despite past relationships (Clinton) or party affiliation. This is a true sign of leadership.
