Palin's Perception Problem

I wrote last night about how Palin vastly exceeded expectations in her performance during the vice presidential debate. It was widely presumed that she wouldn't be able to hold her own because -- let's face it -- she can't possibly have the depth or breadth of knowledge or experience to draw upon when articulating her responses. Yet she performed adequately by simply changing the game. She turned the debate into a game of personality and charm instead of a battle of wits and platform.

But let's be honest here. To the extent that Palin succeeded last night, she did so by essentially flirting with the American people. She used cutesy colloquialisms like "why doncha" and "doggoneit." She tossed her head and repeatedly winked at the camera. She answered every question with a wide smile and a twinkle in her eye. When you watch the replay, you get the impression that she still thinks she's a pageant contestant, answering that question about "how she'll use this role to impact the next generation" with some glossy but meaningless memorized schtick combined with perfect posture, a few head bobs toward the audience, and several well-rehearsed blinks.

So while Palin may be proud of her performance last night, the very means by which she succeeded can be used as a criticism against her. In fact, last night's debate highlights and/or exacerbates several problems for Governor Palin:

1. She's perceived as an intellectual lightweight. Her flirty tone and colloquial style of discourse were effective in distracting from Biden's experiential advantage, but they also serve to underscore this notion that Palin can't compete on substance alone. She can't sell her knowledge or experience, so she has to resort to selling herself.

2. She comes across as terribly shallow. Probably in part due to her pageant and television training, Palin went out of her way to smile and look genial throughout the debate. Frankly, she looked like she was having the time of her life. Unfortunately, this was true even when the discussion turned to topics like possible harm befalling Senator McCain and the loss of Senator Biden's. The impression is that she's not even intellectually engaged enough to realize what is going on around her and what an appropriate response is. She's flying in some kind of pre-programmed autopilot mode.

3. She's advertising her inexperience. Everyone knows she's inexperienced. McCain tries to spin this as a positive by referring to Palin as a maverick and an outsider. But last night Palin twice used her inexperience as an excuse in order to avoid answering questions.

IFILL: So, Governor, as vice president, there's nothing that you have promised as a candidate that you would -- that you wouldn't take off the table because of this financial crisis we're in?

PALIN: There is not. And how long have I been at this, like five weeks? So there hasn't been a whole lot that I've promised...

--

BIDEN: Gwen, the governor did not answer the question about deregulation, did not answer the question of defending John McCain about not going along with the deregulation, letting Wall Street run wild. He did support deregulation almost across the board. That's why we got into so much trouble.

PALIN: I'm still on the tax thing because I want to correct you on that again. And I want to let you know what I did as a mayor and as a governor. And I may not answer the questions that either the moderator or you want to hear, but I'm going to talk straight to the American people.

So Palin is excusing herself from asking certain questions because, "hey, I've only been at this five weeks." But this is a foolish and implicit admission on her part that she's frankly too inexperienced to have adequate knowledge of the issues at hand. And the jovial nature with which she delivers the line reinforces the sense that for her this is all some kind of game. She's just along for the ride. There's no indication that she appreciates the significance of her appointment or has any respect for the serious responsibility that is her potential office.

4. And finally, perhaps of the most concern for McCain/Palin, Palin is losing favor with women -- and fast. Poll after poll, most recently the one released by Time today, indicate that Palin's support among women is declining. Unfortunately for Palin, last night's performance will not help matters. (There are not yet any gender-specific reactions to the debate available. I will update as those numbers are released.)

Last night's debate emphasized all the aspects of Palin that women find repulsive: that she cannot hold her own intellectually, that she's cute, that she's flirty, that she's willing to degrade herself and womankind in order to remain competitive. I would not be surprised if her support among women continues to slip this week.

Here's the problem for McCain and Palin. McCain is trying to sell this story that she's a strong female figure: a maverick reformer who holds her own in a man's world. And it's certainly possible to construct and market that mythology using elements of Palin's history. The only problem? Apparently McCain forgot to tell Palin the gameplan. She must have missed the memo about her new improved identity. So now with every public appearance Palin reveals more of her true self and consequently further belies this image McCain is trying to project. With every smirk, with every flirty toss of the hair, with every "youbetcha" and every wink, Palin proves that she's not the strong woman who makes it on her own terms; rather, she's just another shallow, self-absorbed girl who's willing to sell herself to make it to the top.

First, I think Biden did

First, I think Biden did more for women when he talked about losing his first wife and his daughter, and when he was sincerely choked up when he spoke of worrying over his kids' survival.

Second, I keep thinking about what we're facing today, and I am repeating myself here from my other posts, but I think it's crucial -- if I feared more wars,  losing my job, my home,  do I want the second-in-command to wink at me?

This is what I don't get.

This is what I don't get. She said clearly to Katie Couric that the important think to do in a crisis is, "Just don't blink." Okay, so we don't blink, but we *wink*??

You can't blink or you'll

You can't blink or you'll lose the staring contest. However, you can wink before the contest.

I also felt that she tried

I also felt that she tried to seem too "main street." The performance was a little over the top and seemed fake. It was like she was trying out for a role, not campaigning for office. Barbara's "beauty pageant" comparison was just what I was thinking.

She should anger every smart woman. She is reminding me of the woman at the office who wears low cut dresses and bends over the desk in hopes of a raise from her boss. I don't want any politician, let alone one a heartbeat away from the Presidency, to flirt with me.

Agreed!  It reminds me of an Administrative Assistant I once shared with male colleagues... She wore very low-cut shirts, and on the day she met with management for a promotion, her blouse was even lower-cut than usual.

She angers this smart

She angers this smart woman!  She's the reason women are not taken as seriously and are forced to struggle twice as hard to make it in male-dominated fields. If a man pulled what she did last night, he'd be slayed for being a womanizing, pandering, sexist pig...with lipstick.

I think I see how it could

I think I see how it could anger you or others.  To me it's just sad, slightly humorous and it just isn't anything I take personally.   She's embarrassing herself, not other women IMO.

I think we have enough positive female role modeling going on to get all bent out of shape about one. Yeah, it sounds like I'm lecturing y'all probably.  Don't mean to do that.  I just think we can afford not to take this too seriously, "also". ;)

... Especially since the odds are high than she'll be back in Alaska for good, before too long.  Out of sight; out of mind.

yeah. I disagree. Because

yeah. I disagree.

Because this is playing out on such a huge stage, the implication is that this kind of sexual manipulation is acceptable and effective in 21st century America. And it shouldn't be.

Nice job Barbara, awesome

Nice job Barbara, awesome analysis! As I was reading this I was like "but what about XX" ohh wait, that's point 2, "but what about YY", ohh that's in point 3 and so on. Good job.

I agree whole heartedly

I agree whole heartedly with the above comments.

questions or be challenged on that.  I doubt that would

be tolerated in high school debates.

I too agree. Palin's

I too agree. Palin's performance lacked professionalism. 'Flirt' is a nice word compared to what some of the guys called her on main street. She proved to be power hungry at the expense of her young family. Mccain better look out, she will throw him under the bus at the slightest chance. That maybe just recompence for keating five and dumping his first wife the way he did.

"I watched the vice

"I watched the vice presidential debate in a ballroom at the Four Seasons hotel in Aviara, just north of San Diego, along with a couple of hundred women attending Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit -- a receptive audience, you would think, for a debate featuring a woman who might become the most powerful in the land. It was an ideologically mixed crowd, including representatives of ExxonMobil, a major sponsor of the conference.

If the reaction of the Republican women in the room is any indication, it was not a very good night for Sarah Palin."

Gov Palin may have received

Gov Palin may have received the benefit of low expectations in her debate performance, but her cutsey pit bull mom routine just made it harder for a woman in the future.   John McCain did a diservice to this election when he selected her.  The political ploy is very evident.  There have to be at least 500 men in the republican party who are you fresh and oh yeah smart.  To pass all of the better candidates and pick Gov Palin is unimagineable.

It's a huge setback for

It's a huge setback for women. Gee, if only I didn't have that masters degree and phi beta kappa, perhaps I could have made something of myself. If only I'd known.

  Barbara, Great

Barbara,

Great analysis - thanks.

 And to David Sayers,

Your points are right on - and friends at work noted her 4 inch heels & tight skirt - what was that all about?

No doubt McSame told her not to wear a pant-suit;  show off the legs & high heels...

I really like dressing up and I get it but not for a serious debate  - I know when to dress in a more professional manner so the focus is on my knowledge & not on my legs... or whatever... with the tight skirt.

I have had several guys at

I have had several guys at work comment along the lines of, "I'm not voting for her, but she was hot!"

Ugh. I hope she didn't just reseal the glass ceiling.

Me, too.  I think a lot of

Me, too.  I think a lot of people are seeing that comparison.  I am worried that Palin has set women back by her shenanigans, but on the other hand, it might help serious female politicians because it makes them look even better.

I can only imagine what some of the female Republican power players are really thinking.

Speaking of "American", why

Speaking of "American", why is it that Palin focuses on "Alaska" - as if it isn't part of the US - about 543,219.76 times more often that the general United States?

It just hit me... Since

It just hit me...

Since McCain paraded her out as his VP nominee, I have been trying to figure out what/who she reminde me of.  I just couldn't figure it out-but I finally did!!  She reminds me of a STEPFORD WIFE!!!  That phony smile that is always present, being folksy and flirty, having a limited vocabulary and rote answers programmed into her by the all dominant man in her life (in this case McShame!)  Kind of creepy if you ask me!

I don't know... she doesn't

I don't know... she doesn't come across as the submissive one in her personal life. When it comes to the political life, the way she gave in to the McCain campaign I'd say spot on.

Just think if McCain had

Just think if McCain had selected Mitt Romney as VP. Does anyone now think that their campaign would be giving up on Michigan, or running behind in Nevada? What a dumbass!

  Dumb Ass is too

Dumb Ass is too kind!  That man is creepy... and lately what is up with the WICKED laugh?

That video needs to be passed on and on - he looks really OLD & SCARY - like a comic villian conspiring to do evil...

I have to weigh in here.

I have to weigh in here.  This woman is setting women back at least 30 years!  I was never a bra burning feminist, but always believed anyone and everyone should get equal pay/work according to their abilities.  I'm old enough to remember when it wasn't so, and have had to work twice as hard to prove my abilities.  To have someone suddenly thrust into the national political arena and we have to discuss whether or not she is intelligent, but everyone agrees she is cutesy, makes my stomach churn.

My opinion...she has gotten where she is by using her looks, sex appeal, and an outgoing personality combined to manipulate.  That worked just great in a state with less people than any major city.  She has the soul of Dick Cheney,  and she honestly doesn't realize that she is in way over her head.  That part of her reminds me of Bush.

Overall, she reminds me of the Joan Collins character on the old Dynasty television program...only dumbed down.  If this works for her, and the American people buy into it,  what message does that send?   A woman that wants to be taken seriously in business, any business, doesn't play up her sex appeal in the office, or on the trail.  She saves that for home, where it belongs.

This is **exactly** how I

This is **exactly** how I feel. It's not that this implies that ALL women have to act this way, or that this is the ONLY way to be successful. Because it's not. It's just that this implies that this behavior - this sexual manipulation - is acceptable. And in 2000+, this should be deplorable, not acceptable or cute or effective or charming.
