The obsession continues
So I get a couple of McCain-mails yesterday. As most of you know, I'm on McCain's email list so I can keep track of what kind of propaganda he's putting out there. The last three weeks of mails have hardly mentioned McCain at all, and they seem to like it that way. Yesterday both emails were about Obama.
Seems they've put together a new ad poking fun at Obama's celebrity.
And the email reads like this:
We can all agree that Senator Barack Obama is one of the world's biggest celebrities and every celebrity needs a fan club filled with adoring fans and Senator Obama certainly has his fair share. You might even be tempted to join this fan club.
If you love Senator Barack Obama enough to join his fan club you'll love higher taxes, massive federal spending, government-run health care and higher gas prices. Despite Senator Obama's lack of experience and readiness to lead, he's still considered dreamy and deserves an amazing fan club - he just doesn't deserve to be our next president.
John McCain stands ready to lead our country as the next President of the United States. He has laid out a plan to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and strengthen our economy through lower taxes and job creation. He is prepared to serve as our next commander in chief.
Most of the email, like most of McCain's discourse over the last month, is just silly fluff. There are only two sentences containing factual assertions:
You'll love higher taxes, massive federal spending, government-run health care and higher gas prices.
[McCain] has laid out a plan to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and strengthen our economy through lower taxes and job creation.
So let's address these in turn.
1. "Higher taxes." There's two things you need to be aware of here: First, one of the reasons Obama's plans appear to cost more in terms of taxation is that Obama's not afraid to pay for his proposals. Obama doesn't vote for gimmicky tax breaks or tax rebates that really just send us further into deficit spending, run up the debt, and deflate our own dollar. Taxation is nothing compared to how hard deflation is hitting the family pocketbook. We are decreasing our own net worth! It's dropped thirty percent in eight years. THIRTY PERCENT! How hard is this to understand? It doesn't matter how many green pieces of paper you ghhave if the paper's no longer worth anything!
I was reading this analysis on how Washington's been trading our long-term solvency in terms of short-term superficial gains. The likely impact of this kind of recklessness is truly frightening. And McCain wants to continue this strategy - he proposes an additional $650 bn in tax cuts, mostly benefitting industry and the top .1% of wage-earners, while continuing to spend and spend. It's time we have somebody that's willing to stand up and tell the truth: there are no free lunches. Not for any of us. Obama, with his lone stance against the summer gas-tax hiatus, has already made it clear he's willing to take the road less traveled and call it like it is.
Further, the other reason Obama's plans appear to tax more than McCain's plans, is that McCain hides many of his taxes. Take his energy plan, for example. McCain wants to start reining in CO2 output (a good objective, btw) by taxing industry for its emissions. McCain will tell you that this is not a tax. But we all know that if you tax the industry, the industry passes that tax on to its consumers. His "hidden" energy taxes alone are expected to increase the average household's energy costs up to 30% - in addition to the inevitable increases due to inflation and availability.
So, McCain's taxation allegation just doesn't hold water. Let's move on.
2. "Massive federal spending." Well, as I mentioned above, equally important as how much you "spend" is whether you're actually going to pay for it. Obama seems willing to write the checks, whereas McCain seems to prefer plastic.
In addition, the two big-ticket items of late have been the wars abroad and the Medicare Modernization Act.
Obama, as we know, wants to bring the war to an end as soon as is reasonably possible. This will save us two billion per week. The war to date has cost almost two TRILLION dollars. That's enough to provide healthcare and education for preschool children, to rebuild New Orleans, with plenty left over. an act whose cost is grossly inflated by terms developed by industry lobbyists. Then there's McCain, whose commitment to the war is unyielding, and who seems more than willing to consider further engagements elsewhere.
The problem with the MMA - the most expensive "entitlement" program in history - is that it was, in part, written by industry lobbyists, and some of the terms are greatly inflating a fair-market-value of the program. Obama has promised to repeal the terms favoring the industry and costing us billions. McCain refuses to commit one way or the other.
3. "Government-run health care." Republicans like to bring up "socialized" medicine because it strikes fear in the heart of the average American. But the truth is that every time someone crunches the numbers, the US comes in behind most industrialized nations when it comes to quality and effectiveness of our health care system. In fact, in the US the rate of unnecessary deaths due to improper care is higher than any other industrialized nation, and several developing nations. Think about that for a sec. So, McCain...Senator Obama wants to overhaul the system...and you're suggesting that's something to be ashamed of? I think not.
4. "Higher gas prices." McCain, honey, higher gas prices are guaranteed. To even hint that one could offer lower prices is either deception or delusion.
5. "McCain has laid out a plan to reduce our independence on foreign oil..." You'll notice McCain doesn't suggest that Obama doesn't have such a plan. That's because Obama does.
6. "...and strengthen our economy through lower taxes..." As I noted above, lowering taxes while increasing spending doesn't strengthen our economy; such a policy jeopardizes it.
7. "and job creation." Again you'll note McCain doesn't suggest Obama doesn't have a plan to create jobs, because Obama does.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting awfully tired of McCain's obamacentrism. I'm especially getting tired of an obamacentrism that only serves to mock and misrepresent Senator Obama. I find McCain's rhetoric cheap and immature, in addition to misleading and evasive. I was convinced that eventually McCain would return to talking about his own policies and ideas, but after a month of his continued attempts to deflect from his own ideas (he does have some ideas, right?) by attacking everything Obama says, does, is, and was, (and often even what Obama isn't and wasn't) I'm beginning to lose hope.

Speaking of dope, isn't obama the one who was addicted to and sold cocaine, while John McCain was held as a prisoner of war for 5 years. (admitted in his book)
Who is the real dope?

Speaking of dope wasn't your
Speaking of dope wasn't your current president an addict to cocaine and alcohol. It's amazing that many who served with McCain have come out against him, and virtually called him a traitor. McCain a POW? Ha, he is one the first POWs I have studied who came back in such good physical and mental stability. Many of the war vets I know, several in my family...just fought in the war and they are traumatized beyond belief.
I can promise you that if "Mr. Not so Bright, Bottom of My Class," was one of these TRUE AMERICAN HEROES who are TRULY suffering financially, emotionally and physically he would be singing a new tune regarding our soldiers.
So to answer your question, McCain is the real dope!
I'd like to see obama snort
I'd like to see obama snort one of his legendary lines of cocaine that he admits to being hooked on.

Hey guys! Did you hear?
NoM and MI, this is exciting
NoM and MI, this is exciting news! WoooHooo Big time Reps joining the cause. From the article:
<The three Republicans backing the Democrat are part of a group called Republicans for Obama that will be launching a website in coming days to lay out differences between the two candidates, Hauser said. More Republicans are expected to join the group, she said.>
A serious question...What will happen when they find out the website title of "Republicans for Obama" is already taken?
RFO ROCKS!
Sorry to break it to you,
Sorry to break it to you, but those Republicans are nothing close to big time reps. They are liberals who have an R next to their names.
http://dontvoteobama.net/
Now we see where you are
Yet you believe that McCain
That's the big difference
Perhaps Noba is simply too
Perhaps Noba is simply too young to remember what the Republican party used to stand for.
Watch this.
When he gets done playing
Confirmed, for the most
Confirmed, for the most part. I don't see anyone mentioning Hagel's endorsement of Obama, although I believe it. But Leach and Chafee have both endorsed him and touted Obama as representing "traditional conservatism."

Anyone who claims to be a
Anyone who claims to be a republican and support the ultra liberal, socialist, marxist, left-wing, America hating Obama is really not a republican. You should go ahead and just switch parties to the liberal party. Also, Chafee and Hagel are republicans in name only and know nothing about traditional conservatitism.
Sweetheart, I appreciate you
Sweetheart, I appreciate you taking the time to post, but would you also consider taking the time to read first? We've spent eighteen months delineating Republican reasons to support Obama. Seek and ye shall find.
Obama is for bigger
No, hotstuff, we've been
No, hotstuff, we've been posting the reasons for eighteen months. Some of us were smart enough to see through McCain and the other Bush-juniors from the beginning.
"He is the most liberal
"He is the most liberal senator in Congress"
You quote the National Review statement, and of course they thought Kerry was the "most liberal". My father in law exclaimed that to me a few weeks ago, so I visited NR site and copied off the legislation they had cherry picked to come to that conclusion. I then polled me father in law on that same legislation and wonder of wonders, turns out that old Republican was MORE liberal than Obama!
Aside from that nobama, you don't know what you're talking about.
I should have added that the
There is no way to be more
There is no way to be more liberal than obama, it is not possible. Nice try.
Tell me then - attempting to
Tell me then - attempting to have an intelligent, thoughtful conversation - which pieces of legislation do you disagree with?
Was it the vote for the creation of an "independent ethics oversight office" to investigate corruption in Congress? Setting higher fuel standards for vehicles? Or was it his support to "Express the sense of Congress that funds for U.S. troops in the field should not be cut off"?
Explain, EXPLICITLY and in
Explain, EXPLICITLY and in detail, what makes you think no one is more liberal than Obama. I dare you. And try not using the stale and weak "guilt by association" argument. And if you try out labels like "socialist", you'd better be able to back it up. Come on, edify us. Snap to it.
Chop chop.

Oh goodness...there's no
It is refreshing to see
It is refreshing to see someone who took the time to learn about obama, his views and make an educated decision about whom to vote for. Unfortunatelty, this election in particular, it seems like many people are so caught up in a good speech or the color of his skin to actually understand what this guy stands for. There are way too many unknowns about to him to make him the most powerfull man in the world. Is is getting so old to hear why people like obama and his bumper sticker slogans like change and hope and not come up with a real reason why we should vote for him.
" ... too caught up in ...
" ... too caught up in ... the color of his skin."
Bingo. Many people are acting paranoid and racist because a Black man happens to be getting attention for being a galvanizing force in politics. I've heard many racist comments used to describe him.
By the way, he's half-Black.
As for your assertion that there are "too many unknowns about him", try again. There is plenty one can learn about the man by reading one of his 4 books, or by paying attention to the race (the presidential one). Education cures ignorance. Also, the things I know about McCain solidify my choice to help make Obama POTUS.
McCain Deathwatch, July 10 '08: McCain presently has a (partially complimentary) 35% chance of winning the election.
And there are many, many
And there are many, many people voting for him just because he is black. You really don't think a white man with radical marxist views and that little experience would be where obama is today. Fat chance.
Obama has changed his views so many times I don't know what to believe much less believe his books. I looked at his past drug addictions, drug dealing, marxist views, his hate filled mentor pastor wright, his support for Farakahn and hamas, friendship with terrorists like william ayers and the list goes on and on. If more Americans were educated about his troubling past and zero accomplishments, he wouldn't stand a chance.
http://dontvoteobama.net/
Nobama, the only people who
Truth is, some people are
Truth is, some people are voting for Obama regardless of his race, many appear to be voting against him because of his race, and some seem to be voting for him because of his race.
As for your "Marxist" label, explicitly state what allegedly makes Obama a "Marxist". And be very careful because I'll easily spot and rip down any Hannitized talking point on the subject.
This should be good fun, though I doubt you'll take up the challenge.
McCain Deathwatch, July 10 '08: McCain presently has a (partially complimentary) 35% chance of winning the election.
You're pretty funny. Why
You're pretty funny. Why do you listen to FOX? or any of the others for that matter?
Please, tell me what a "Hannitized" version of marxism would be?
BTW, you still have the Deathwatch thing up...what's up w/ that?
Nobama & Sarg,I'm sorry I
Nobama & Sarg,
I'm sorry I mentioned my husband's race. The two of you need to stop and just your information and ideas.
Wha? No offense but
Wha? No offense but however this discussion turned to the matter of race, I'm now interested in discussing it (my ideas and perspective), because it's apparently an issue this election cycle.
If you have a personal sensitivity the topic of ethnicity, just skip over this section. No one will be upset with you for it.

McCain has serious issues
McCain has serious issues and there's no way I could recommend anyone voting for him, especially during war times. Sorry. This will sound mean, but I'm gonna be frank:
I appreciate the service McCain gave the US decades ago, through the armed forces, but he is a broken, emotionally unstable, dishonest man who seems to be suffering from senile dementia. I don't want his finger anywhere near the "trigger", if you get me.
That's not change I can believe in my friend.
McCain Deathwatch, July 10 '08: McCain presently has a (partially complimentary) 35% chance of winning the election.
I have been a registered
I have been a registered republican for many years and get all the RNC and McCain mailings and emails. Frankly, I see no difference this year from the Maverick than what was happening 4 years ago. It is very dissappointing.
Unlike many Republicans, I have NEVER been a John McCain supporter. I always believed he was much more involved in the Keating 5 than he was ever forced to admit to and his wranglings on behalf of the S & L industry cost us billions. Then again when he supported the Graham Banking Reform which has lead to this terrible mess we are in now. Not to mention Phil's criminal wife of the Enron world.
McCain is the only Senator I know that has switched positions on every major peice of legislation that he has sponsored, including his own campaign finance bill after it was passed.
Everybody gives him a break because he is a War hero and old as Moses...well, I will give him a break too...just not the Oval office as his nap room.
John McCain is a fraud and a puppet of George Bush and the old gaurd and can not be trusted!
I am TJ Goulet, and I approve this message.
Well said, tj!
Well said, tj!
I'm not going to challenge
While McCain was sacrificing
While McCain was sacrificing his life to protect you, your man obama was addicted to snorting and selling cocaine. Then McCain was a prisoner of war for over 5 years, had the chance to be freed but refused and had his arms snapped and twisted while a prisoner.
And you, the thoughtfull person you are Lyra, are not going to challange whether he is a hero or not. WOW
http://dontvoteobama.net/
In the first place sir,
In the first place sir, McCain was neither protecting you or anyone else while in Vietnam, and he didn't sacrifice his life. They didn't invade us, we started the war with them, then invaded. They never were a threat to us!
Being shot down doesn't make one a hero. Wrong place, wrong time. It is a shame he had to endure being a POW, but that was not his doing, it was our government's misguided attempt to colonize a country that asked for our help.
McCain endured torture,
McCain endured torture, broken bones and endless beatings. He is a stronger man today because of the experience and is willing to stand up and do the 'right" thing, even when it's difficult.
If you mean the right thing
Exactly. McCain doesn't
Exactly. McCain doesn't deserve some sort of "free pass" from having his character examined, simply because he was a POW.
Please LOL.
